Located east of Gatineau on the Ottawa River, approximately half way between Ottawa and Montréal, Montebello is a little country village surrounded by the type of impressive Canadian wilderness made famous in postcards and souvenir photos. The area was first settled in the mid-19th century by the family of Louis-Joseph Papineau, who later became seigneur of the area. Today the village is best known for Le Château Montebello, the largest log structure ever built.
Your full-day visit will begin at Manoir Papineau, a page straight out of 19th century history. Built between 1848 and 1850, Manoir Papineau is now a National Historic Site. The Manor is flanked by four towers; it rules over the surrounding terrain with its landscaped garden, spacious lawns, wooded areas, and a stream.
Your guided tour of the Manor and its outbuildings will culminate with tea in the Blue Room. After tea, you will have time to explore the Manor's immediate surrounding areas.
You will then proceed to the village and visit three local businesses: ChocoMotive, the boutique of a local chocolatier located in an old train station; Fromagerie Montebello, an award-winning cheese maker; and Les Brasseurs de Montebello, a microbrewery that offers unique beers, including a chocolate one! Price: $70 per person
[A minimum of 30 participants is required.]
Visit the historic town of Almonte, Ontario, located only 30 minutes west of Ottawa.
Your visit to this picturesque locale will begin with a guided tour of the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum, located in the annex of the former Rosamond Woolen Company. Constructed in 1867, this National Historic Site features a blend of the old and new, all related to the history of the Mississippi Valley and the textile industry.
Enjoy lunch at an eatery of your choice as you take in the quaint sites and shops of downtown Almonte.
You will also visit the Mill of Kintail, the original stream-side studio of sculptor and medallist R. Tait McKenzie. Now a museum the mill, an example of 1832 architecture, displays famous Canadian artworks from the 1930s. Draw inspiration from the surrounding natural scenery as
A.Y. Jackson once did in this same location.
The mill also features the James Naismith Museum of Basketball. The inventor of the sport, Naismith was an Almonte native and a special friend of McKenzie's. Price: $35 [A minimum of 20 participants is required.]
Brush up on your history by visiting two of the most popular museums of the National Capital Region: the Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Museum of History.
The Canadian War Museum is Canada's national museum of military history and one of the world's most respected museums for the study and understanding of armed conflict.
The mandate of the Canadian Museum of History is "To enhance Canadians' knowledge, understanding and appreciation of events, experiences, people and objects that reflect and have shaped Canada's history and identity, and also to enhance their awareness of world history and cultures." Price: $40 [A minimum of 30 participants is required.]
Enjoy a delicious buffet dinner and a convivial, relaxing atmosphere while you are cruising in comfort and style on the Ottawa River. Take in the beautiful views of Parliament Hill, the Canadian Museum of History, Rideau Falls and Locks, and many more beautiful sites. This 4-hour cruise and meal is an event to be cherished. Price: $81
[A minimum of 75 participants is required.]
